Simple wellness tips – keep that new year momentum going!

simple wellness tipsWe’ve reached February and some of that “it’s a brand new year, brand new start” energy may be starting to wane. How about some simple wellness tips to keep that healthy glow going strong, with just a few simple additions to your routine? Go on, you’re worth it!

Drink more water

We know we should be drinking plenty of water throughout the day. But for those of us in the northern hemisphere this can fall by the wayside when the weather gets chilly. Here’s a tip: the water doesn’t have to be cold! Boil water throughout the day or swap out a caffeinated beverage for a good old cup of hot water. You get the added bonus of warming your hands too!

For those lucky souls soaking up the sunshine this time of year, keep a big water bottle close by at all times and try to drink even more than usual to stave off dehydration.

Add a squeeze of lemon or lime juice to your water to benefit from their detoxing powers. Drink a large glass first thing in the morning to help clear out toxins your body has been working on overnight.

Get plenty of rest

Getting a good night’s sleep is vital. Aim for 7-8 hours a night and try to maintain a routine bed time to get your body in sync with when it’s time to rest. Check out these tips on how to improve your shut eye.

Eat more fruits and vegetables

We know how important fruits and vegetables are for our health (see more here). A recent CDC study found that just 1 out of 10 adults are eating the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables. The recommendation for adults is 2 cups of fruit and 2-3 cups of vegetables each day. Try adding fruit or chopped veggies to your snack rotation or pack a smoothie full of fruits and veggies for breakfast to get you started on the right track. Meditation has so many benefits. Just 5-10 minutes a day can change everything. Try it before you get out of bed in the morning – sitting up so you don’t nod off again – and see how it changes your day.

Reading can improve creativity and inspire us to be better. But there are other benefits too. Taking a break from our usual mental chatter by losing ourselves in a story or self-help book (or whatever you’re into), gives our brains a time out from all the crazy. While reading to wind down at bed time is great, there are some out of the box places to read too. Keep your book close by and instead of scrolling through social media when you have five minutes, read a couple of pages, even in the bathroom! Audible is a great way to “read” if you don’t have a lot of spare time. Listen to a book while you’re driving or doing the grocery shopping and use that time to escape the mundane!

Add a short workout a few times a week

Park further away, take the stairs, walk on your lunch break or around the house while you scroll through social media (you might have missed something while you were reading a book :P). Adding more movement to your day is a great way to boost your energy, increase your fitness and improve your mood!
