Natural deodorants – without the stink

Natural deodorants free spirited sistersWhy natural deodorants?

Just as we mentioned in our post, The Clean Beauty Revolution is Here, some cosmetics contain nasties that could be doing your body harm. Deodorants are no different. Traditional antiperspirants and deodorants contain harmful agents such as Aluminum, parabens (can affect hormones), Propylene Glycol (skin irritant), triclosan (classified as a pesticide by the FDA) and synthetic fragrances. These are used to help block sweat from leaving the body or kill bacteria in the armpits in an unhealthy way.

The science

We are supposed to sweat. Sweating helps regulate body temperature and also gets rid of toxins from the body. The aluminum in conventional antiperspirants stops the functioning of sweat glands, which in turn stops the toxins being removed from our bodies. Not something we should desire for an optimally functioning body.

We develop the funky smell when the sweat that is released parties with the bacteria that live in our armpits. Antiperspirants try to kill, or reduce the number of, this bacteria to prevent the party and therefore the funk.

I don’t want to stink!

Let’s be real switching to a natural deodorant carries emotional baggage. No one wants to risk being stinky! We’d all like to continue being our fresh as a bunch of just picked flowers selves, thanks very much! Believe me, in my search for a natural deodorant that actually works, I have been that stinky girl. Fortunately, I’m no longer in high school and no one was mean about it…except for my face when I smelled myself…and my kids and hubby when I chased them with my stinky pits, lol.

Good news

Not only has clean beauty gone mainstream, but clean deodorants too, so there are plenty of options. What doesn’t work for me might be great for you and vice versa. It’s worth the trial and error to find one that is going to do your body right.

My finds

I have tried the salt crystal deodorant, which in theory sounds great. The salt and minerals prevent the bacteria from growing and therefore the funk, buuuuut, these did not work for me. Not when my parents suggested it when I was a teenager, and not as a grown woman.

Many natural deodorants contain baking soda to absorb the sweat before it can party and essential oils to help mask any odor in a much-better-for-you way than synthetic fragrances. One of my favorites is Schmidt’s Naturals. Just make sure you follow the directions – a little goes a long way! They have some great varieties like Bergamot and Lime (one of my faves), charcoal + magnesium, rose and vanilla, and cedarwood and juniper, among others. So there are options for everyone!

Another great natural option is Modere’s deodorant. It doesn’t have a strong fragrance, so it’s great for men and women, and it does the job of keeping you fresh. Check out our Fave Find of the week for a great deal on this one!

Give health a chance

So, go on, give a natural deodorant a try. With natural deodorants going mainstream, you can find something that works for you.

Yours in stink-free natural health,

Claire 😛
