Moon Energy: how to harness it and avoid the overwhelm
The full moon is coming this week and with that often comes a bit of craziness in our household. I know I feel a bit out of whack when the full moon is on its way, and it seems to send the kids a little haywire too. And so many of my friend’s say the same thing, reporting a definite spike in restless nights and tanties going to the next level! There’s not a heap of scientific evidence supporting these theories but when you’re experiencing it, it feels pretty real. All that aside, the moon cycles and astrology are just so interesting. I’m definitely no expert on it yet but I think there are ways to harness the energy of the moon and instead of feeling overwhelmed by it, use it to bring more purpose to your life.
There are 8 main phases of the moon. New moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter and waning crescent moon. I like to write down in my diary when the full moon and new moon are, so I can have a reminder to do little rituals that match with each of them. Although all of the phases have their own unique attributes, I like to focus on these two.
A full moon is a good time to write down all the things you want to let go of. Affirm that you’re ready to release all that no longer serves you. It’s known to be a time for wishes to be fulfilled and to achieve your dreams.
I like to sit out under the moonlight (and bring my crystals out to charge up!) and write away. Things to let go of like limiting beliefs and grudges that might have crept in. You can even burn (safely!) the paper it’s written on. Then I go inside and do a little meditation to calm my mind before going to sleep.
The new moon is known to represent new beginnings, positive changes, optimism and hope. This is a great time to set new intentions and goals and is an opportune time for creativity and writing.
I like to sit in a calm space, light some incense or a smudge stick to clear the room, and write down everything I’d like to manifest in my life. All my intentions and all that I’m grateful for. I affirm that I’m ready to make room for new things and am open to abundance in all its forms.
There are a number of manifesting rituals you can do around the moon cycles, and one that resonated with me a few years back is by Sarah Prout. She has a method whereby you think of an affirmation or something you wish to be real in your life, and write it out 55 times for 5 days in a row. The idea is to write it in the present tense as if it has already happened. A good idea is to make it short and sweet as your hand can get super-sore after writing it so many times! I’ve done all kinds of things from my dream house to happy, healthy family to what career I’d like to have.
Some may feel this kind of stuff is a bit woo woo, but it’s not all dancing around and chanting under the moonlight! (but that’s ok too ;). I believe there’s something behind the change in energy with the phases of the moon. It doesn’t hurt to have your little rituals, even just to remind you to be present and have regularity in setting your intentions and goals. And at the very least, having some answer as to why everyone in the house has gone a little cray!
