Moving your body is so important for overall health. Our bodies are made to move and they just work better when we do! Regular exercise gives you more energy, improves your mood, helps you sleep better and maintains your weight. I have had a long-time passion for being active and keeping fit, and tried a lot of things along the way. Exercise is one of the things that keeps me sane and when I don’t do it, I feel other areas of my life are impacted. I’d like to share with you what I do, keeping in mind I’m not a qualified personal trainer, so consult where you need to consult!

Where to start?

It can be hard to know where to begin if you haven’t done a lot of exercise in the past or have had a long break from it. Try working your way up to 3 good workouts a week where you break a sweat. On the other days, do active things like cleaning the house (yay!) or doing the shopping. Rather than sitting while you watch your kids training or practice, walk laps of the area instead. If you’re going to work and know you will be sitting for a long time, try making your journey to work your activity time by parking further away, taking the stairs or walking on your lunch break.

Work out around your lifestyle

What you do for exercise can change a lot over time and it’s all about adapting to your current situation and fitting it in wherever you can. Before having kids, I used to like going to the gym and doing classes. That evolved to walking with my babies in the carrier, then the pram/stroller, while adding in a few squats and ab work at home. Things changed again once my young ones no longer wanted to stay in the pram or ride their bike or scooter in the intended direction, so I’ve added in HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) at home. When I can, I’ll head out for a walk, run or fitness class to mix things up.

My weekly routine

2 x 20 mins HIIT at home

1-2 x 45 mins Walk/run

1 x 60 mins Barre class

3-5 x 20 mins Yoga and Meditation first thing in the morning at home

Find your happy

It’s easier to consistently work out when you find the type of exercise that makes you feel happy. If you prefer to be outside (like I do) then structure your workouts around that. If you prefer to run on the treadmill or do a class, do that. You’ve got to find the things you like so it doesn’t become a chore. And remember to enjoy yourself! Get social and go with a friend…it’s amazing how quickly an hour can pass by when you’re deep in conversation with your bestie! You will be doing yourself a world of good by getting your blood pumping and happy hormones flowing and you will be glowing by the end of it!
